Hair Transplant Surgery
Step by Step - Consultation and Surgical Strategy
Educational
Process
After arriving for a first consultation at
the Ruston Clinic, patients are brought to
the video media room where they are shown
educational videos on a 100-inch screen and
given a brief lesson about hair transplants
and balding. This information will help patients
to better understand the hair loss process
and the alternatives for treatment. The more
educated the patients are regarding hair loss
treatments, the more realistic their expectations
will be regarding the results.
After, a microscopic analysis of the scalp
is done. Patients will have a photographic
analysis of their individual case and microscopic
mapping of their scalp (donor and recipient
areas). It is also possible, via advanced
software, to simulate the results and give
patients an approximation to what their results
will be.

The
next step is to go to the consultation room
where remaining doubts about surgery (pre-surgery,
during the procedure, and post-surgery) and/or
alternatives for treatment are discussed.
Only at this moment in the consultation will
the best strategy, surgery and/or treatment,
for the patient’s specific case be discussed.
Factors such as the type of hair loss, the
stage of hair loss, the probable evolution
of hair loss, the donor vs. recipient area
balance, age, family history, shape of face,
etc., are taken into consideration. Two monitors
provide visual images to help the patient
further comprehend the explanations.

The
best surgical strategy for the patient’s
case is presented: the areas to be treated,
those that should be prioritized, and the
best design of the frontline (the first line
to receive the transplants). This design is
very important, because it will shape the
new hair contours. Each patient has a different
face and different region of hair loss, therefore,
the design of the front line should be unique
to the individual. “We prioritize a
design with more pronounced recession in the
corners, which not only provides a more natural
appearance, but also in reducing the recipient
area provides more volume and thickness. It
is much more aesthetic to have a smaller but
denser area of transplanted hairs than a larger,
but thinner, area.”

The
purpose of the consultation is to educate
the patient about the hair loss process and
possible treatments, be they surgical or clinical.
Every hair loss case is unique thus every
patient is unique and the consultation should
be personalized, taking into consideration:
age, hair loss in family members, hair type,
the quality and quantity of the donor area,
design of the front hairline and shape of
the face, the possible causes for the individual’s
hair loss (more possibilities in the case
of female patients), etc. Therefore, it is
a slow process requiring time and attention,
as treatment will unite technology with art.
