DETAILS THAT MAKE THE DIFFERENCE
Dr. Antonio Ruston

Introduction: Every chain is comprised of interconnected links. As such, it only takes one broken link for the entire chain to lose its capacity to function. When new technologies are developed and better results become easier to achieve, there is a tendency to overlook details. Though small, these details make all the difference, whether in terms of motivating and improving the work environment of the surgical team, in terms of the post-operative comfort of the patient, or in terms of the surgeon’s professional image.

Objective: In this work, the author will elaborate on the small details which he has adopted and which, in his opinion, make a significant difference.

Materials and/or Methods: The author will elaborate on these details, dividing them into pre-, post- and intra-operative. Topics covered will include: a pre-surgery environment conducive to relaxing the patient (appropriate music and illumination...); ergonometrics for the surgical team (correct seating, work-counter height, foot rests, etc.); quick shiatsu massages for every member of the surgical team between the separation and placement phases of the surgery; the use of a post-operative gel forehead wrap to prevent frontal swelling; the right cap; clear, easy-to-understand post-operative care instructions; and much more.

Discussion/Results: The author will show that, after including these details, he has improved not only the productivity and motivation of the surgical team but also the comfort and satisfaction of his patients. He will discuss how these details effect the surgeon´s image and aid in marketing his practice.

Conclusion: Small details make a great difference.
