Hair Loss in Women - Treatment
Today
there are countless clinical therapies with
topical medication, scalp stimulation and,
more recently, laser-therapy.
It is important to make clear that if the
cause is genetic, no clinical treatment will
bring lost hair back, but it will slow the
evolution of hair loss. In some cases a thickening
of the hair occurs giving the impression of
hair growth.
The most efficient
medications are:
Minoxidil:
It acts by improving circulation in the scalp
and consequently slows hair loss. Used alone
the results are limited but combined with
other treatment, good results may be obtained.
Finasteride:
It acts by blocking the DHT action at the
roots hence slowing hair loss. Results are
often better in men and it should never be
taken orally by women, only topically, and
only with supervision by your doctor.
Other:
Some specialists use topical treatment done
in the doctor’s office, such as scalp
mesotherapy. In this treatment the active
ingredients are injected directly into the
patient’s dermis (skin) and often provide
good results. Using anti-balding shampoo was
popular in the past but the results are quite
limited. It is more appropriate for treating
other factors that contribute to hair loss
such as Seborrheic dermatitis (dandruff),
among others.
Surgical Treatment
The permanent solution for
hair thinning is all micro follicular unit
transplantation. Many women do not seek this
solution due to pure lack of information or
because they might believe that it is exclusively
for men. When appropriately recommended the
results are excellent and can give back a
woman’s self esteem and the joy of living.
Today, approximately 10% of our hair transplants
are performed on women.
Indicated in
cases of:
More
advanced Hair Loss (Grade II and III ):
Always combined with clinical treatment to
“decelerate” the evolution of
hair loss. In other words, the transplant
will increase hair volume and clinical treatment
will stabilize hair loss.
Correcting scar
tissue: burns, aesthetic facial
surgery, radiation therapy, etc.
Note: We only recommend
hair transplant surgery when the donor area
has a good density in the back (near the nape)
and when the hair loss process has stabilized. |
